Antwerp's biggest and finest art museum, opened in 1890 in the southwestern Zuid area of the city, with 7600 paintings, sculptures, drawings and prints in a collection that dates from the mid-14th century to 1970, including Flemish Primitives, Peter Paul Rubens and the Baroque, Henri De Braekeleer and the Flemish expressionists, Belgian locals James Esnor and Rik Wouters. The museum closed for radical renovation and reinvention in 2010 (inside and out) and reopened, after several setbacks, in September 2022, with the museum now split in two, with one half housing the old masters, and a new wing featuring modern works.
