Along with the Central Station, this is Antwerp's architectural standout, postioned prominently in the town's centre and rising high above all in its shadows. Built between 1353 and 1533 and then partly reconstructed in the Renaissance style following a fire, the church became the largest Gothic structure in the Netherlands. The interior has a dark but tremendous feel, augmented by four of local boy Peter Paul Rubens's greatest works – The Raising of the Cross, The Descent from the Cross, The Assumption of the Virgin and The Resurrection of Christ — and Quintin Massys's Lamentation of Christ.
