Very popular and very central hotspot for Belgian-style chips/fries, Fritkot Max takes its name from the man who is meant to have gotten the snack going on this very spot in 1842. This modern incarnation, started in 2000, bears little resemblance to the 19th century—nor do the chicken and sausage items on offer, or the various sauces for that matter—but the tradition of excellence remains. Prices are at the pricey end of cheap. Overlooks Groenplaats, a few seconds from the cathedral. A short climb up quite steep stairs will take you to a seating area and a tiny museum devoted to this potato staple.
